Mokolodi Nature Reserve

Wildlife Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre

The Mokolodi Wildlife Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre is situated within the grounds of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve. The centre is dedicated to the rescuing, rehabilitation and release of all Botswanan wildlife. Many indigenous African species fall victim to fast cars, electric fences, dogs, cat attacks, herbicides, pesticides, trapping, poaching, robbing of nests. In fact the human-engineered threats on wildlife are now countless. Once the animal is injured, often there is no one prepared or knowledgeable enough to take over the enormous responsibility for the medical care of the wild animal.

Our African wildlife is too precious to be lost needlessly. That is why such a facility such as Mokolodi Wildlife Sanctuary andRehabilitation Centre was created. It is headed up by an expert veterinarian - Dr. Kyle Good and her dedicated team of rehabilitators, all of whom work to ensure that any species admitted is given a 110% chance of recovery and re-release into the bush.

Often the duties of staff members calls them to work many nights and days to pull an animal through its most vulnerable hours. Consistant monitoring, dietary knowledge, behavioural needs and stress management are crucial to the success rate of wildlife recovery. Sound scientific knowledge professionalism and unerring enthusiasm for wildlife are foundational to the Mokolodi Wildlife Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre.

From the toothiest and furriest such as a banded mongoose to the most regal and powerful such as a tawny eagle - all are treated with equal importance and equal dedication. Once the wildlife has recovered, intensive re-training and re-wilding of the animal is undertaken to ensure its eventual release. No animal, bird or reptile will be released until it is absolutely certain they can thrive and survive independently in the wild. Many weeks and sometimes months are given over to individual wildlife for this purpose.

There is nothing more rewarding than releasing a tawny eagle to fly strong and free after months of intensive care. Mokolodi WildlifeSanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre is always grateful for any monetary donations in order to purchase medicines and new equipment so that they can continue their rewarding and necessary work.
