Permaculture Garden

The Permaculture Garden

Permaculture, essentially meaning 'permanent' + 'agriculture', seeks to adapt agriculture to the environment. Essentially, permaculture is a means of sustainable, subsistence production. It is natural; using only indigenous plants and naturally occurring herbicides and pesticides and it also embodies appropriate technology through the use of grey water, recycled materials, and compost as a fertilizer.

A new project at Mokolodi Nature Reserve, the Permaculture Garden aims to grow plants in an environmentally-friendly way by maximising space, and utilising natural fertilizers and recycled water. All vegetables grown are used to feed visitors at the Education Centre, and occasionally the Restaurant as well as catering for the Animal Sanctuary. The Permaculture Garden also educates visitors on how to practically and feasibly grow indigenous food crops in their own homes and villages, even with a very limited water supply.

The Permaculture Garden attracts many visitors.
