Drought Conditions 2012
Drought Situation
Dry and harsh conditions are nothing new to Botswana, however when the country receives below average rainfall, the impacts are severe and rapid. 2012 has been declared a semi-drought and when driving through Mokolodi, you would be forgiven in thinking that it was a full drought.
The Reserve has been heavily impacted by the lack of rain and the resultant lack in both graze and browse for the wildlife. The Reserve management anticipated a rough period ahead and have removed a substantial number of game through capture and relocation. In addition, we have also been supplementary feeding for over two months. Recently we have also secured very generous donations of bran/chop from Bolux and also Lucerne from NutriFeeds. While these efforts have certainly contributed to the well-being of the animals on the Reserve, it is now becoming increasingly evident that we need to supply even more supplementary feeding.
The Mokolodi Restaurant and its management have sent out an appeal for donations of animal feed or contributions towards purchasing animal feed for the Reserve’s game. Please may we request that all inquiries and contributions are done through them. Peter Neumann at the Mokolodi Restaurant can be contacted on
