Mokolodi Nature Reserve took on two male cheetah cubs over 15 years ago. Late last year, following a short illness the one male, Duma, died as a result of renal failure. On Saturday, Letotse, his brother also died following signs of renal failure. Cheetah in the wild generally live to approximately 8-10 years and both of the Mokolodi males had reached over 15 years - an impressive age for cheetah by any standard.
Duma and Letotse were originally part of the reason for starting up the Cheetah
Conservation Botswana (CCB) project and have jointly through Mokolodi and CCB
offered tens of thousands of people the opportunity of getting close to a live cheetah. In addition, they have also played a pivotal role in educating people about cheetah and predators in general. In a country where livestock farming is so prevalent, helping people understand the role of predators in the wild is of paramount importance so as to reduce the number of human-wildlife conflict situations and encounters.
Letotse died on 09 June 2012.2011 Annual Review
