Mokolodi Nature Reserve

Community Involvement

A common problem faced by some game reserves and national parks around the world is the hostility from neighbouring communities. This hostility is usually caused by these communities deriving very little benefit, financial or otherwise, from the reserves and parks.

When a game reserve or national park is established, more often than not the neighbouring communities from which the land is taken do not benefit much from its establishment, directly or indirectly. In some cases this may lead to an increase in poaching activity. Indeed, some reserves are forced to take such extreme measures as setting up anti-poaching patrols

.

The Mokolodi Nature Reserve adopts a positive stance by encouraging community involvement and employing local people. In fact, the Reserve is the largest local employer. It is convinced that the way ahead lies in Cultural Tourism which will not only benefit local communities financially, but also encourage them to protect and cherish both their environment and cultural heritage.
